The Quarterly Variance Deep-Dive

Turn quarterly variances into strategic insights, not just explanations

Monthly narratives explain what happened, but boards want to know which trends matter and which actions to take. Three months of variance data sits in separate reports with no synthesis.

That is the gap this drop closes. It is a finance & admin skill built for Claude, and it takes about ten minutes to set up the first time. After that it runs in under a minute.

Who should use it

Finance managers who already produce monthly P&L narratives and now need to identify patterns and strategic drivers across quarters

How it works

The skill file does five things, in this order.

1. Load three months of actual vs budget data. Give Claude your P&L variances for each month in the quarter with line item, actual, budget, variance amount and percentage.

2. Ask for pattern identification across the quarter. Claude spots recurring variances, one-time events, and trend lines that monthly reports miss.

3. Request materiality ranking by cumulative impact. Claude calculates which variances accumulated to strategic significance even if individual months looked minor.

4. Generate forward-looking questions for management. Claude drafts specific questions the board should ask based on the variance patterns it identified.

5. Produce a three-paragraph executive synthesis. Claude writes what changed structurally, what remains volatile, and what decisions the data suggests.

What comes back

A quarterly variance report that shows strategic patterns, ranks issues by cumulative materiality, and suggests specific management actions instead of repeating monthly explanations

The mistake to avoid

Include non-financial context markers like staff turnover dates, campaign launches, or supplier changes so Claude can link variances to business events. The best quarterly insights come from connecting financial patterns to operational reality.

Running it

Save this as SKILL.md inside a folder named after the skill, then drop the folder into your Claude Code skills directory or upload it to a Claude Project. Claude reads the frontmatter to decide when the skill applies, so keep the description line intact. For a one-off run, paste the prompt block directly.

Where this fits

On its own, one skill saves an hour a week. The compounding happens when three or four of them run in sequence on the same input, the same transcript that produces a scope of work also produces the follow-up email and the project brief. That is the point at which it stops being a prompt and starts being an internal tool. If you want that wired into the systems your team already uses, that is the work 67 Digital does.

In the file

You are a strategic finance analyst reviewing quarterly performance.

I will provide P&L variance data for Q{quarter_number} {year}, covering {month_1}, {month_2}, and {month_3}.

For each line item, you will receive: actual amount, budget amount, variance amount, and variance percentage for all three months.

Your tasks:

1. Identify patterns across the three months: Which variances are recurring? Which are one-time events? Which show a clear trend direction?

2. Calculate cumulative variance impact for the full quarter by line item.

3. Rank variances by materiality, considering both individual month size and cumulative quarterly impact.

4. Flag any variances that were minor in individual months but became material when accumulated.

5. Based on the patterns, generate three specific questions the board should ask management.

6. Write a three-paragraph executive summary covering: (a) structural changes evident in the quarter, (b) areas of continued volatility, (c) decisions or actions the data suggests.
